Will Samsung eventually have their day in the sun

Today however, it looks like that trend might be about to change. The Federal U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washingtonruled on Friday that a lower court should reconsider the sales ban against Samsungs Galaxy Tab 10.1, a decision given in favor of Apple in a patent dispute with the South Korean electronics maker a while back.

The injunction was originally put in place ahead of a month-long trial that pitted Apple against Samsung in a closely watched legal battle that ended with a huge win for Apple last month on many of its patent violation claims. Among some of the claims was that Samsung had copied functionality from their vertible iPad line.

The jury eventually found that Samsung had not violated the patent which was the basis for the tablet injunction and Samsung argued the sales ban should be lifted. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said she could not act because Samsung had already appealed.

In its ruling on Friday, the ruling allows Koh to now consider the issue.

This little ray of hope for Samsung comes just one month before the South Korean corporation is expected to unveil the second generation of one of its most successful devices, the stylus-equipped Note. The ruling also limited the amount of mobile devices Samsung could introduce into the US market, which had a lot of carriers and retail locations wondering about the upcoming holiday tech sales season.

US Carrier AT&T is just one of the carriers looking to beef up its holiday offerings with several Samsung products, including the Note 2. Verizon Wireless already carries several iterations of Samsungs Android-based phones, and with the lifting of the ban, could see a lot more Samsung products making their way into the holiday sales figures for carriers that are counting on gadget filled product lines to bring in customers.

Motorola Mobility stays separate from Google

Google paid $12.9 billion for Motorola Mobility last month, and after countless hurdles to get approval from regulators Google announced they intend to keep Motorola Mobility as its own entity.

“Its important it stays on its own battlefield. We are not integrating Motorola with Google, we’re making sure it has everything it needs to win in its own space. You shouldn’t expect full integration of the two companies,” Google’s Chief Finance Officer, Patrick Pichette, said.

Although Google owns Motorola Mobility, there will not be a “Googlerola” brand in the near future. Google now has access to a portfolio of 17,000 patents, which will give Google a competitive edge in the smartphone and tablet market. Combine the patents and a mobile R&D department with Google’s thriving Android OS and the world has a smartphone/tablet conglomerate.

Eric Schmidt, Google’s Chairman, affirms that the Motorola Mobility purchase is to help Google further its ideals of modernity through the acquisition of Motorola Mobility’s “products…people…[and] innovation.”

“We bought Motorola for the sum of the patents, the products, the people, the innovation,” he says.

It is unknown how Google intends to wedge itself into Motorola Mobility’s structure, but as it stands Motorola Mobility will make its own product and consumers will continue to have “Motorola” devices instead of “Googlerola” devices.

Microsoft wants your help to kill Internet Explorer 6

When Windows XP was first released, it brought with it a browser that many considered was fairly up-to-date and standards-compliant for its time. Yes, Internet Explorer 6 in its heyday brought many improvements over its predecessor, such as improved support for CSS, DHTML, inline frames and integration with its MSN Messenger. In fact, so popular was IE6 that it was able to achieve a market share of 90% during the XP days.

Unfortunately, it is clear IE6 is no longer capable of meeting the needs of todays Internet users, thanks to issues such as security holes and near non-existent support for modern web standards. As a result, Microsoft has started a little campaign in the hopes of getting tech-savvy users to discourage the use of the ancient browser among their circle of friends. Internet, meet the IE6 Countdown webpage.

Microsofts goal is simple enough: to lower the existing market share od IE6 down to an almost non-existant 1%. And to achieve that, it needs the help of the Internet community to spread the message that IE6 is an antique browser that should not be used anymore due to its lack of support for modern web standards. Users who wish to join Microsoft in its noble cause can follow the instructions available on the website to help make the Internet a better place.

And just so you know, 4.4% of Singapores online community still makes use of IE6. If you know of any friends who are still on that relic of a web browser, lets just say that Microsoft has presented you with your chance to do your good deed for the day. If you need a little help in getting your message across the not-so-IT-savvy peers, perhaps this little comic might be of assistance.
